Having addresses in the Cyrillic zone is not an attempt to follow fashion but a means to drive commerce. Andrei Vorobyov continues: "We`ve started accepting bids from companies on 12 May. The new rules of priority registration make the whole process much easier. We see that even those trademark owners, who already have addresses in Latin script, would like to be registered in the Cyrillic domain. We plan to accept preliminary bids in June."
The RU-Center receives more than 100 bids daily, but not all meet registration requirements. ‘We approve almost half of them’, Andrei Vorobyov says. Some Russian mass media are expected to join the domain on 15 July, and starting from 1 October the domain will be open for everyone. Russia’s Communications Minister, Igor Shchegolev, predicts from 25,000 to 50,000 commercial websites to be registered in the РФ. zone by the end of the year. First, they will be just mirroring those already existing in the RU area but with time the Cyrillic domain will have its original websites, the ministers said.
The Cyrillic domain is gaining popularity thanks to active development of the electronic government. Electronic mail will be used to identify each person willing to enjoy services of the e-government. For businessmen having to settle many issues with the authorities this will come really handy, an IT-expert Yuri Maryenko says.
