The government on Wednesday said it would adopt e-governance and a paperless environment, in all ministries and departments to enhance their performance and efficiency.

The decision came at the first meeting of National e-Government Council, chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz at the PM House.

“Pakistan has to keep pace with international practices of office management and decision making by improving our work culture,” Prime Minister said. He said e-governance will provide efficient access of information to the public, create more transparency and would be a quantum jump to meet the future challenges.

The Council approved a strategy for introduction of the concept and practical implementation of the electronic government in all Agencies and Departments.

Prime Minister Aziz said training of government employees in Information Technology would be made mandatory.

He said special programmes would be organized by the Electronic Government Directorate, under the supervision of the Ministry of Information Technology.

The Prime Minister also approved a proposal for providing incentives and rewards for government employees who successfully complete training, while special awards would given to those who excel.

The Prime Minister also directed amendment in the Rules of Business to facilitate a paper-less office environment. A committee was constituted to propose necessary amendments in this regard.

The Council also decided to meet quarterly to review the implementation of the plan.

The Prime Minister also directed Ministries and Departments to regularly update their web sites, and called for their regular monitoring.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister asked the Ministry of Labour and Manpower to evolve an efficient and transparent procedure for selection of skilled and semi-skilled manpower, for export.

Talking to Minister Labour and Manpower Ghulam Sarwar Khan at the PM House, he said our workers are efficient but they need taking to sharpen their skills to be more competitive.

Taking to the federal minister for religious affairs Ejazul Haq, he said the government is keen to provide maximum facilities to the intending pilgrims to save them from any hassle during Hajj and Umrah.
