The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) has agreed to provide a data centre facility to the government free of charge for a period of 15 months, paving the way to launch the e-government system at the federal and provincial level.

The Ministry of Information Technology (MoIT) has already introduced e-government technology at the Prime Minister’s Office and MoIT.“The MoIT has requested PTCL to provide this facility for an indefinite period but its management agreed to provide it for 15 months free of charge,” said an official source.

It is estimated that the e-government system will be launched at all federal and provincial ministries within three to four months, creating a paperless environment to run the affairs of the government.

The source went on to add that PTCL may extend the initial 15-month lease on the facility after the deal has run its course. However, he said efforts were underway to build a similar facility to avoid dependence on others.

According to a press statement issued after the meeting, Minister of State for Information Technology, Anusha Rahman, held a meeting with PTCL CEO Waleed Irshad along with other senior officials of the ministry in Islamabad on Monday.

During the meeting, Rahman discussed PTCL’s data hosting centre facility proposal and all participants expressed their satisfaction over the provision of the data centre facility free of charge.

Rahman said the Ministry of Information Technology would now be able to materialise its plan to introduce the e-government system at 28 federal ministries, provincial ministries, Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Information Technology. The minister told PTCL CEO Irshad that a paperless environment had already been established at the IT ministry, while an online attachment would be available at the federal and provincial level.
