72.9 per cent of households have an internet connection, which is 4 per cent more than last year, while almost every company in the country uses computers in its work – it was noted at the Informatics Day conference in Serbia.
18th November is celebrated in Serbia in honour of CER10, the first Serbian digital computer produced at the Mihajlo Pupin Institute in the 1960s.
As a result, the former Yugoslavia was one of the six countries in the world that produced a digital computer, which at that time represented a top scientific and technological endeavour.
President of Serbian Informatics Society, Nikola Markovic said that, in the last two or three years, Serbia has been recording strong ICT development while computerization of the country is ongoing.
According to Markovic, the value of the rendered IT services in Serbia will have reached 1.2 billion euro by the year-end, which is an excellent result.
Markovic also points out that IT education in schools is better organized and that it is important that the e-government project continues with its development. Currently, the e-government platform provides 800 services which puts Serbia in the 10th place in Europe and in the further, with 800 services in the 43rd place on the Doing Business List.
“It is very important to note that close to 200 companies in Serbia have recorded top results in terms of the application of ICT”, said Markovic.
“However, we need more agility and better organization for faster digitization of Serbia”, Markovic pointed out.
He also said that there was a growing interest and support from the government for the implementation of ICT and innovation (Government’s IT Office, e- government platform, etc.).
However, the Serbian Informatics Society points out that it is not good that the Law on Electronic Communications has not been adopted yet, and that there is a noticeable lag in digitalization of production processes, and also a poor implementation of ERP, CRM, cloud and mobile applications.
“We need to pay more attention to the development of the Industry 4.0. Another thing that is worrying is the brain drain, as well as the fact that there is a lot of software piracy”, Markovic said.
Markovic adds that only 12 per cent of companies uses CRM software and 18.4 per cent use e-invoice.
Uros Rajcevic from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia presented the results of the research related to the use of ICT in Serbia in 2018. He said that, according to the survey, 72 per cent of households in Serbia had an internet connection, which is a 4 per cent growth compared to last year.
Broadband internet connection is an important prerequisite for further digitization is the country, and the use of this type of internet connection rose from 62 per cent in 2017 to 72 per cent this year, which is a 6 per cent increase.
“Over 3.2 million people use the Internet every day, but also 24 per cent said they had never used it,” Rajkovic said.
Also, the survey has shown that more than 54 per cent of the people who use Internet engaged in online shopping, while 45 per cent never did it.
As for the use of the Internet in companies, the survey says that it is 100 per cent.
