The new and dynamic initiatives taken by the Prime Minister's Office earlier last week in speeding up the efforts towards a fully fledged e-Govenment system in the country will promote a greater degree of transparency, accountability and efficiency all round.

In keeping with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's policy of good governance that has been mentioned in the Royal titahs in recent times this latest move by the Prime Minister's Office has already generated positive responses not only here but also abroad. For instance Malaysia's leading mass circulation daily The Star in a news item titled "Brunei Embarks on e-Government Inititiative" on Friday reported that the Sultanate has decided to focus on responsibilities while being responsive on in real time under the new e-Government system that will come into operation soon.

The Brunei government is taking bold steps to meet the challenges that comes with globalisation, when governments - as key drivers of economic growth - must find ways to transform the way they operate and provide services to the constituents, the report added.

Early last week the Prime Minister's Office said it would develop and implement an electronic-government strategy, in partnership with IBM and Syabas Technologies, an IBM business partner.

IBM and Syabas Technologies will design and build a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure which will enable the Brunei government to better deliver services to its constituents and gain significant improvements in service delivery and information sharing, IBM said in a statement, the Star report added.

"This initiative will help the Brunei government deliver end-to-end services to its constituents with greater transparency, accountability and efficiency. The government can focus on its core responsibilities while being responsive in real-time," General Manager of IBM who is also the IBM Malaysia's Managing Director was quoted as saying in the report.

The e-government project will be undertaken by IBM Business Consulting Services and its local partner Syabas Technologies.

The Brunei government will have access to the IBM Business Consulting Services Solution Centre based in Singapore; it offers business-consulting expertise together with vendor-neutral platforms to design, validate and run technology solutions.

IBM and Syabas Technologies had earlier signed an agreement to implement the e-Government initiative for the Brunei Prime Minister's Office.
