Transforming Government since 2001
Opportunities are many for Brunei in the field of Green IT, though thought needs to be put into exactly what form of Green IT is suitable for the country.

Jake Eo from the National Information Society Agency in South Korea said this as he was at Universiti Brunei Darussalam to deliver a public lecture on Green IT.

Speaking to the Bulletin, he said, "I was invited here by the EGNC (Brunei's E-Government National Centre), and from what I've seen, while Brunei has no manufacturing industries, I see so many opportunities to adopt Green IT technology, such as Smart Grid technology."

A Smart Grid is a form of electricity network that delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using two-way digital communications control appliances at consumers' homes, which allows for the saving of energy and reduction of cost among others.

"Another opportunity is in renewable energy," he continued.

"Green IT can help control various types of renewable energy, which in turn can help to reduce emissions and reduce energy costs.

"An Intelligent Transport System is another possibility. This system can help reduce traffic jams, which will reduce CO2 emission."

He added, however, that a lot of thought needs to be put into exactly what kind of Green IT is suitable for Brunei.

The public lecture, entitled 'Green IT Strategies for Accelerating the Transition to Green Society' saw Mr Eo explaining exactly what Green IT is, and how Korea utilises it to reduce carbon emission.

Green IT is, simply put, a way to counter global warming through the reduction of CO' emission, particularly in the manufacturing of IT products and IT services, which represent two per cent of global CO' emissions.

He explained that this is because, along with IT development, energy consumption is projected to increase dramatically, and added that it is estimated to rise 9.4 times by 2025, potentially amounting to 15 per cent of global CO' emissions.

InKorea, among the Green IT methods of reducing the carbon emissions generated by IT products and services are the development of the world's best low energy and high efficiency IT products, and the promotion of a low energy consuming Green network system that is 10 times faster than existing ones.

With the Green IT initiative also comes the aim to improve energy efficiency by building energy management systems, smart grids and intelligent transportation systems.

Also needed is the reduction of the demand for transport and logistics through tele-working, video conferencing, e-Government, e-Commerce, and e-Learning.

"On top of reducing carbon emissions, Green IT is also a promising industry that is helping to lead green growth," said Mr Eo in his presentation, as the Green IT market was worth 470 million dollars in 2008, and is predicted to grow into a 4.8-billion-dollar market by 2013.
