The E-Government National Centre (EGNC) yesterday called on citizens and permanent residents to name the Brunei National Portal in a contest through their Facebook page, a press statement said.

With half of Brunei's population connected to Facebook, the centre hoped to engage the public to enter the contest through their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/egnc.gov.bn.

"Participants should consider the functions of the portal and the purpose of the portal to create a single word name that can be used for the portal. The portal will host all e-government services such as bill payments, applications and renewal of licences," according to the centre's Facebook page.

The contest started yesterday, and will end on January 31. Shortlisted names will be published on the EGNC Facebook page on February 7 for public voting.

"The public will have one week to vote for the winning name. The winner will be announced on February 14," according to its Facebook page.

The contest allows each participant to submit only one entry.

Only original names can be used, the name has to relate to the nation and understanding of the national portal, and only entries submitted to the designated EGNC email address at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it will be considered.

The winner will receive an Apple iPad. Canon Powershot A495 cameras will be given out as consolation prizes, and lucky voters can look forward to receiving an iPod Shuffle.

The centre will launch the national portal for a one-stop-shop for online government services and information in 2011. It added: "With the introduction of this portal, the increasingly technologically-savvy Brunei public can now obtain updated information on government services online and interact with the government with greater convenience and simplicity."
