The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) will upgrade its network infrastructure to integrate and connect all its departments in improving their communication processes following a signing ceremony yesterday.

The $2 million contract was signed with two private companies to upgrade its network system in supporting the implementation of e-services as well as renovation of its IT Service Centre.

System Analyst Jamhali Yahya at the ministry told The Brunei Times that the project involves connecting the whole ministry comprising 10 departments with the infrastructure of a local area network.

"This network infrastructure project is the foundation of our e-government project. Without it, we cannot proceed to the next project, which is providing e-services, because we need to first connect all departments together," he said.

He explained that having the infrastructure will "make it easier" for staff at the ministry to share information with one another, such as sharing documents. He added the infrastructure will also enable staff to increase the usage of their email system.

"This infrastructure, which will support the implementation of e-services, will allow staff at the ministry to work more effectively and efficiently," he added.

He further said that a few bidders are in the process of preparing the tender of the e-services, with one under evaluation.

"This tender under evaluation is the electronics (labour) exchange, which is for the public to apply for jobs and where employers can advertise their jobs."

Senior Special Duties Officer Hj Ali Hj Mohd Yusof said that another objective of the project was to supply infrastructure for local area network for ongoing projects, such as the Inmate Management System at the Prisons Department and the Fire Rescue Management System at the Fire and Rescue Department.

The network infrastructure project, undertaken by Azure Technologies Sdn Bhd, costs $1 million and is expected to be completed within nine months.

The second contract between the ministry and McHouse Interior Decor Sdn Bhd was for renovation works at the ministry's Information Technology Services Centre, which involves modifications on the ground floor level of the ministry's building that houses services, controlling, monitoring and management systems of e-government services. It will be equipped with facilities for customer service, help desk and a training room.

"It is expected that with the completion of these two projects involving the network and the renovation work, it will facilitate and expedite communications and enhance the interaction of all the citizens of the ministry and departments under it," said Hj Ali.

The senior special duties officer stressed that the projects were the "key in driving the implementation of e-government systems for the ministry".

On hand to sign the upgrading of the network infrastructure project were the ministry's Permanent Secretary Dato Paduka Sa Bali Abas, Senior Special Duties Officer Hj Ali Hj Mohd Yusof, Azure Technologies Sdn Bhd Director Hj Matussin Hj Ahmad and Manager Yew Hong Chong.

The second contract was signed by the permanent secretary and senior special duties officer, as well as McHouse Interior Decor Sdn Bhd's Director Sharifah Masani Wan Alwi and Sales and Marketing Executive Shawn Cassidy Narcis.

Present to witness the signing was Deputy Minister Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Mohd Yussof.
