Launching the Career Carnival 2009 at the International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday, Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Dato Hj Adanan Pehin Dato Hj Md Yusof said that the Electronic Labour Exchange or ELX will be established by the Employment Centre at the Labour Department as one of the projects planned under the e-government.
"The ELX is a system to find employment electronically, based on the job-matching (concept), where local jobseekers can register online to seek help in finding a suitable employment," he said.
Playing the role of a facilitator between the private sector and local jobseekers, the Home Affairs Minister said the introduction of such a system was one of the initiatives of the government, through the Labour Department to address the issue of unemployment in the country.
Other measures implemented by the department include restricting certain jobs in the private sector for locals and reviewing partnership programmes with companies to organise training courses and schemes to enhance market ability of jobseekers. Pehin Dato Hj Adanan also advised jobseekers to not solely depend on the government for employment since jobs in the public sector are limited.
"Jobseekers need to be aware, sensitive and adaptable to the current employment demands of the private sector," he said.
"It is hoped that jobseekers will be ready to serve in the non-government sector to increase the number of locals (in the sector)," he added. "I am confident and believe (this) will reduce the number of jobseekers or unemployment in the country."
The minister also spoke of how Islam encourages its followers to be hard-working in their efforts to seek rezeki through halal means. He acknowledged that academic qualifications and expertise are a major advantage in finding work. However, he noted that in the service sector, high qualifications do not mean everything as those with good communication skills and commitment also have a chance to find work in the sector.
