The deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office foresees closer cooperation between the public and private sectors in managing national development programmes.

There will be a different pattern of ownership and a different pattern of funding for projects, said Dato Seri Paduka Eussoff Agaki Hj Ismail during yesterday's Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) Stakeholders Forum.

"In these contractual modes of implementing development policy and programmes in the country, mechanisms for closer collaboration between both sectors needs to be cultivated," he said. He said that the Prime Minister's Office is taking the leading role in moving e-government initiatives, and welcomes the contribution of private-public partnership to enhance the delivery of e-government services to benefit citizens, businesses and employees.

"The benefit of partnership in the e-government context will instil the best commercial skills, practices and disciplines, while maintaining a lean civil service and creating private sector opportunities," he added. The closed-door forum at Sheraton Utama Hotel, organised to identify common interests and opportunities for collaboration, also saw a BEDB presentation on future economic opportunities.

This includes petrochemicals, alternative sources of energy, aquaculture, Islamic finance and ecotourism.

"The BEDB believes that the spirit of partnership is critical to our efforts to transform our economy for the benefit of our people," said Dr Manaf Metussin, assistant chief executive officer and head of BEDB's Stakeholder Relations.

Brunei Darussalam has been trying to diversify its economy's dependence on the oil and gas sector given dwindling resources.

Other participants at the forum include Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah Hj Abd Wahab, Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, permanent secretaries and other business communities.
