The Ministry of Education and ZimacSilicon Technologies Sdn Bhd (ZST) yesterday penned a contract to upgrade the library service at the Institute Technology Brunei (ITB).

The contract incorporates the design, supply, upgrading, installation, migration and commissioning of software and hardware for the implementation of an integrated Electronic Resource and Information Services (e-RIS), involving digitisation work for its archive collection and subscription to online databases.

The signing ceremony took place at the Empire Hotel and Country Club where the guest of honour to witness the event was Hjh Norjum binti Hj Mohamad Yusop, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education.

Signing on behalf of the Ministry of Education was Mr Lim Jock Cheng, Director of ICT, and witnessed by Dr Hjh Naemah binti Hj Basir, Acting Director of ITB. Meanwhile, signing forZimacSilicon Technologies was Dato Paduka Haji ldris bin Haji Abas, Managing Director of ZST and witnessed by Mas Roslee bin Dato Paduka Haji ldris, Director of ZST.

In her welcoming speech, Dr Hjh Naemah noted that the upgrading of the library is in line with the Ministry of Education's effort in supporting the e-Government national goals in the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), with a focus on the Government's drive towards e-Government initiatives.

"Today's libraries are no longer functioning on a traditional based service but libraries that are extending beyond the physical walls of a building by including material accessible by electronic means," said Dr Hjh Naemah.

Therefore, through the implementation of this project, ITB students and other registered users will be able to have online access to these digitised resources.

However, she added that it also signified the need for library personnel to undergo continuous training in order for them to be adaptable to any crucial developments in the information and library world.

A library management system called Digital Media Collection Management System (DMCS) will be implemented to ease the use for the librarians and their users.

It is a web-based system, which includes functions for searching, cataloging and viewing of the digitised materials via the Internet for ITB library users.
