In a press statement, the Ministry said that the HelloIT program has considerably decreased computer and software prices, making them more accessible to a larger public. Meanwhile broadband connections to the Internet have risen by 23 per cent, showing the government's commitment to eradicate the possibility of a new divide between broadband and narrowband users. This increase in subscriptions, said the MITI, was a result of the changes in the way broadband services are offered. Previously consumers could only buy a fixed monthly subscription for a broadband connection, while today there is also the possibility of buying pay-per use broadband connection.
The government, according to the MITI, has increased the on-line content which interests the Maltese public. Renewal of passports online is the latest addition to the eGovernment services. The government is also analysing the possibility of introducing health services and information online.
Minister Austin Gatt has expressed satisfaction that the work being done by the government and all the interested parties is being fruitful in decreasing the digital divide in Malta.
