The government is planning to roll out a range of services that can be accessed via smartphones, civil service head Mario Cutajar announced today.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Cutajar said a green paper on m-government has been launched and is open for public consultation.

He said the aim is to launch the first mobile app for government services by March 2017.

MITA executive chairman Tony Sultana said statistics show that nowadays more people access the internet from smartphones than computers.

He said the new m-government strategy will allow people to fill in forms and make payments through their smartphones.

It will also allow information to be delivered to customers though notifications.

A live chat service is also being proposed, allowing the public to connect more effectively with civil servants providing a service.
