The government yesterday accused the Labour Party of not knowing what developments had been made in Malta in the ICT sector.

It said PL spokesman Michael Farrugia is saying that in government Labour would take the internet to every home. But according to a survey by the Malta Communications Authority last May, 98% of students aged between 9-14 confirmed they have the internet at home, and 58% of them even have it in their room, the government said.

Developments in the ICT sector in Malta make Malta a model for various other countries, it added. 3,050 graduates found jobs between 2010 and 2011. But the PL was not aware of all this, the government said.

The Labour Party has always been against the SmartCity project, the government argued, and it was now trying to weaken it. The project, which the Labour Party had approved in parliament, aims to create 5,600 jobs at SmartCity in about seven or eight years, when the foreign companies can start using it.

The government said Dr Farrugia also knew that according to the contract with SmartCity the developers are about a year ahead in their construction plan and the obligation to provide jobs should start being honoured as agreed towards the end of this year.
