Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi visited the Mosta local council yesterday, where one of the terminals has just been installed. He said the terminals, which involved a government investment of €50,000, are aimed at further facilitating the use of e-government services, as well as offering a large array of other services.
“With more than 100 e-government services, Malta is one of the best performers in Europe in this regard. Such services make life so much easier; instead of having to wait in long queues people can benefit from a variety of services from the comfort of their own home, place of work, and now even from local council offices.”
Using the terminals is very simple and the members of staff at local council offices have received training on their use to ensure that the public is well served.
A few months ago another five other terminals, or access points, were installed at the Vittoriosa, Mellieħa, Ħamrun, Siġġiewi and Naxxar local council offices as part of the EGOV4U project. The 10 new access points are being installed in Mosta, Rabat (Gozo), St Paul’s Bay, Valletta, Kalkara, Żejtun, Lija, Mqabba, Xewkija and Xagħra.
The scheme is operated by the Local Councils’ Association with the assistance of the Malta Information Technology Agency.
EGOV4U is an EU project and the Local Councils’ Association is one of the partners. The aim is to build a European-wide consensus platform of integrated approaches that will help influence e-government service delivery, as well as long-term strategic thinking with respect to comprehensive citizen inclusiveness.
EGOV4U helps in removing the barriers to access to e-enabled services by putting targeted technology into the hands, homes and communities of the socially disadvantaged whilst sharing and redeploying best practice e-government ICT solutions for flexible, personalised and multi-channel services, critically evaluating outcomes and providing training and disseminating results widely across the EU.
The project’s approach will make significant usage of technology re-use, extending its practical life and is thus highly carbon efficient.
