"The socially disadvantaged are often the same citizens who are excluded from using the Government's electronic services, as well as those who make most use of the public sector's resources," said the Minister for Home and Parliamentary Affairs Carm Mifsud Bonnici at the launch of the project in Mriehel this afternoon.
The project aims to speed up the transfer of government services to ones based more around a digital platform, that will be more instantly accessible to the citizen through the internet. It will also increase the flow of people whose civic needs have to be seen to.
It will achieve these aims by:
- Supplying local councils, community centres and NGOs with improved computers, in collaboration with the Communications Authority.
- Launching a simple, central e-Gov service portal.
- Directly training the public in using e-Gov through television.
- Creating a number of digital centres
- Opening a number of e-clubs.
The first step to implementing these aims will be the installation of 15 public access terminals across Malta and Gozo. The first five will be built immediately in Birgu, Mellieħa, Ħamrun, Siġġiewi and Naxxar's local councils , with the remaining 10 being opened later on throughout the year.
eGOV4U is funded by the CIP ICT PSP programme for three years from September 2010 to November 2013. The Local Councils Association is part of the project, along with eight other organisations from across Europe.
