Computer and Internet usage

An ICT usage and e-commerce in enterprises survey carried out during the first quarter showed that the vast majority of enterprises (1,132 or 97%) employing a minimum of 10 employees (full time equivalent) made use of computers. This figure increased by one percentage point over 2010. All enterprises in transport and storage, information and communication and professional, scientific and technical activities registered regular computer use.

During the same period, it was estimated that 95% of the surveyed enterprises also ha access to Internet - up by one percentage point when compared to the corresponding period a year earlier. Increases in internet usage were registered in all economic sectors albeit minor drops in manufacturing and in administrative and support services activities.

Furthermore, during 2011, the majority of enterprises made use of broadband Internet, with the most popular connection type being DSL. Increases were recorded in the number of mobile Internet connections, while dial-up connectivity continued to decline, standing at less than 1% of enterprises.

E-Government services

The popularity of E-government services increased substantially over 2011, with 95% of enterprises reporting that they made use of such facilities. This resulted in a 12% increase over 2010. The largest increase was noted in small enterprises, employing between 10 and 49 persons.

Website or home-page availability

Between 2010 and 2011, enterprises making use of a website or a home page increased by 7%, to stand at 77% in the year under review. Large enterprises, employing at least 250 employees were the ones most likely to have a website or home page.

E-Commerce

The percentage of enterprises conducting both sales and purchases via e-commerce has also increased during the period under review. Results show that 20% of enterprises carried out sales via e-commerce, with this percentage increasing to 53% in accommodation and food services activities. On the other hand, purchases via e-commerce were carried out by 27% of enterprises, up by three percentage points over 2010.
