Infrastructure, Transport and Communications Minister Austin Gatt told a conference that the development of the ICT sector is a priority for the ministry and the government.

“(The) government believes that ICT can and should be one of the main thrusts of Malta’s future economic activity – ICT remains at the centre of Malta’s future economic growth in various sectors. It is also key because of its potential of job creation and sustainability of other sectors that depend on a robust ICT industry and skilled ICT workforce, such as the iGaming and Financial services sectors,” he told the conference on ‘Simpler, Smarter, Faster – Virtualisation Made Easier’.

The Smart Island National Strategy, published in 2008, set the Vision for the ICT sector in Malta and recognised that technology, combined with knowledge and will, has the power to transform public administration, achieve growth in the knowledge economy and deliver quality of life improvements – bringing ICT closer to the citizen for the citizens’ direct benefit, Dr Gatt said.

The Malta Information Technology Agency, MITA, will this year meet a number of investment milestones, including the rollout of the electronic ID cards to citizens, the implementation of an eLearning Solution for all state schools, an Integrated Health Information System (eHealth), as well as an Enterprise Information Management System (EIMS), the replacement of the government corporate financial system and the introduction of unified communication services across the government.

The importance of a highly available, flexible, scalable, secure and cost effective ICT infrastructure is vital to the government as it is the foundation on which transformational programmes and their solutions can be built and implemented.

The government’s investment, Dr Gatt said, is not only focused on the optimisation of its infrastructure but also on security, as this aspect is becoming increasingly important as ICT proliferates across government in an increasingly connected enterprise.
