Book lovers, students and scholars will now have the opportunity to reserve books from the National Libraries in Malta and Gozo through an online service. This new scheme entitled 'E-libraries' was inaugurated on Friday morning by the Minister for Information Technology and Investment, Dr Austin Gatt. The Minister said that this service is a further expansion of the e-government services, which are aimed at a complete online presence for the general public.

Both libraries' extensive catalogues are now online and one can reserve books, browses titles and perform other services on the site: www.libraries-archives.gov.mt.

The online catalogue includes the collections at the National Library in Floriana, five regional libraries in Luqa, Mosta, Birkirkara, Paola and Qormi together with nine other branches. The catalogue also includes the Central Library in Gozo together with the Reference Section in Victoria.

A whole area of transactions regarding the libraries will reduce waiting time as this can now be performed from the comfort of one's home, the Minister said.

Amongst the services already online in the e-government scheme, one may include the e-examinations, the Public Registry, e-Licences, immovable property, e-Rents and the Inland Revenue website.
