We aim to turn the public service into a model organisation of a magnitude unequalled in this country, where management information tools are used effectively in strategic and tactical planning, where management indeed the government you elect is capable of taking rational decisions within a learned environment, he said.
Speaking during the Geographical Information Systems Conference, Dr Gatt said promoting ICTs in government was crucial in constructing a Maltese information society and turning Malta into a viable option for investors.
We are therefore giving a new impetus, breathing new energy, to our three-year-old eGovernment programme. This initiative will be broadened and deepened over the coming months and years, he said.
The minister said that, inspired by the objectives of the eEurope action plan, Malta wanted to be among the first to have managed to change that restrictive reality.
We aim at knitting a joined-up government where the achievements that technologies have helped us reach over the past years are consolidated and truly actualised to their full extent. We should be able to make full use of what we have and be able to make the best out of it. This is a project that requires leadership and a collective effort throughout the corridors of government in the common belief that together we do a better job of serving the public, he said.
The minister said to do this there is the need to develop national standards for ICTs to ensure that everyone speaks the same language.
