The Environment and Forestry Ministry has announced today, February 11, that the Strategic Environmental Assessment (KLHS) on the relocation of the capital city to East Kalimantan has completed.
Based on the result, the government will apply 10 principles of smart and forest city in the new administrative center, said the ministry’s expert staffer for the economy and natural resources Laksmi Wijayanti.
“The government focuses on maintaining sustainable development on preserving and enhancing the ecological resilience,” said Laksmi during a discussion at the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Office, Jakarta, Tuesday, February 11.
The government decided to move the capital to the districts of Penajam Paser Utara and Kutai Kartanegara in East Kalimantan Province. The groundbreaking of the project is targeted to kick off in 2020.
The following is the list of 10 principles that the government will adopt to design a smart and forest city at the new capital:
- Manage the new capital based on the existing River Basin Area (DAS). At present, there are 38 DAS in the designated site that will be controlled by using the concept of One River One Management.
- Set a structured network of green spaces.
- Use some 50 percent of the total area for the new capital development. “However, with a low density and proportion of the built area,” Laksmi added.
- Set efficient water consumption.
- Create a low ecological footprint and a low carbon footprint.
- Maintain good air quality and cool temperatures on average.
- Have a good quality of water for residential purposes.
- Preserve the habitat of animals.
- Have a good quality of land cover and landscape design.
- Apply elements of a smart city for environment management.
