Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Minister Marwan Jafar said that the ministry was aiming to provide Internet access to 5,000 villages in the country this year.

“I am developing online villages and there will be 5,000 of them this year,” Marwan said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Marwan said he was optimistic that the target could be met in spite of funding problems.

He said that the program was part of the government’s project to connect rural regions in the country.

The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) reported that the total number of Internet users — both fixed and mobile — in the country had reached about 60 million by 2012, while the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that a fraction of the 58 percent of Internet users were connected via their cell phones.

Last year, Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara said the existing Internet infrastructure was ready for the implementation of e-government.
