Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo revealed this week that several counterfeit e-IDs had been found that bore identical holograms to those on the original cards.
National Police chief General Sutarman has since confirmed to reporters he would launch an investigation into the issue.
"The holograms are legal and made overseas in China and Paris," Tjahjo said, reported ANTARA news, adding: "The players are Indonesians. I could not say if they are employees of the home affairs ministry".
Deployment of the cards to around 170 million out of the country’s 240 million citizens launched in 2011.
Fingerprint, iris and face information and other personal data are stored on the contactless cards, which can be used for services such as voter registration, anti-corruption efforts and e-government services.
Tjahjo said eID card production had to be halted until January 2015, while an investigation was carried out, adding that five million eID cards are yet to be distributed.
