The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology is hoping to expand the use of electronic ID cards for health care services.

Marzan A. Iskandar, the head of the agency known as the BPPT, said e-Health, an information and communication technology program, was expected to provide the public with better access to health services.

“E-Health will contain the medical history of a patient, which will make it easier for paramedics to take action,” Marzan said on Wednesday at the e-Indonesia Initiatives Forum in Jakarta. “People will also be able to consult doctors without having to meet face-to-face.”

Marzan said the technology was available but had not been introduced here because of problems having to do with different educational backgrounds and geographic difficulties.

He said Indonesia should start adopting the technology, which is common in advanced nations, to increase health access and to improve the efficiency of services at hospitals and labs.

“Technology and information can benefit the health sector. It can improve medical services for the people,” he said.

Marzan said e-Health would be launched simultaneously with the second generation of electronic ID cards, or e-KTPs. The IDs will use a microchip to store the owner’s data, which will include his or her medical history.

Meanwhile, the end of April deadline to issue electronic ID cards to all registered Jakarta residents appears like it’s going to be missed.

Purba Hutapea, head of Jakarta’s population office, said only 5.3 million of the 7.3 million Jakarta residents with a city-issued ID card had been registered for the new e-KTPs.

He said the slow pace of registering everyone could be because many people with Jakarta IDs no longer lived in the city.

He said these people tended to hold on to their Jakarta residency status for a number of reasons, including convenience in carrying out business transactions.
