The e-Romania concept will materialise in a web portal that will provide nearly 600 online services, acting IT&C Minister Gabriel Sandu told a Global Forum 2009 conference in Bucharest on Monday.

'The e-Romania strategy entails an ambitious vision of Romania's information future that in the short and the medium-term will translate into a huge web portal that will provide nearly 600 online services,' said Sandu.

He mentioned that the aim of the e-Romania portal is to decentralise public services and facilitate governing so that the citizens may save time and money in relation to the state institutions.

'The citizen's time is a priority with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, how much time it takes the citizens to pay their rates and taxes and get any public document they may need on line,' said Sandu.

The ministry is said to be working on a national and regional strategy project to establish a national centre of supercomputers, with emphasis on combating electronic terrorism, preventing and minimising the effects of national technological disasters, simulating complex nuclear processes, as well as on conducting political and economic policy simulations.

'The components of the centre will comprise both highly performing computing resources for complex inter-disciplinary research, and a sustainable technological and educational base,' said Sandu.

He added that Romania has been earmarked 383 million euros worth of European funds for its IT&C sector in 2007-2013 plus 86 million euros worth of public funds. 'In 2009 alone, projects worth 125 million euros have been approved for financing,' said Sandu.

According to a European Commission report, the IT&C industry contributes 8 percent to the formation of the European Union's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and secures a 40-percent boost in productivity, while generating a 25-percent increase in the EU's GDP.

Sandu said that the Global Forum conference in Bucharest is the second major event hosted by Bucharest City, after a NATO summit meeting.

Attending the ongoing 18th edition of the Global Forum, held October 19-20 at the Parliament Palace in Bucharest, are more than 350 communications and information technology specialist as well as officials of IT&C public administrations from 30 countries.

The forum in Bucharest will present and debate concepts including e-government, e-healthcare, electronic payment systems, e-green and the impact of technology on the environment, telemedicine, digital media, the development of high-speed broadband Internet, redefining dialogue between the Government and society through electronic communication, as well as solutions and applications that serves the citizen's interest in order to improve life quality.

Global Forum was established in 1992 upon an initiative from Items International and the Sophia Antipolis Foundation, enjoying the European Commission's support and participation.
