The Government has recruited the services of a top information technology executive to oversee the administration of its e-Government (e-Gov) agency.

Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Phillip Paulwell, who made the announcement, said Canadian executive, Dr Louis Shallal will serve as chief information officer (CIO) for the agency.

The minister said that Dr Shallal, a highly qualified professional who has operated as CIO in a number of enterprises in Canada, will arrive in the island by mid-April.

Paulwell was addressing members of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ), during a breakfast meeting at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston on Tuesday.

The Minister said Dr Shallal will work closely with chief executive officer for e-Gov, Herman Athias, to promote secured, integrated e-services across Government.

"We believe that this signals a move forward to get our Government to finally move towards eliminating lines and the use of paper and to be far more efficient as we go forward," Paulwell said.

He said the recruitment of a CIO and the establishment of e-Gov Jamaica Limited form part of the Government's focus on streamlining Information and Communications Technology activities and processes across Government Ministries, Departments and agencies.

E-Gov Jamaica Limited is the result of a merger of two Government entities, Fiscal Services Limited, which implemented large-scale Government ICT projects, and the former Central Information Technology Office.
