The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Project has been allocated $80 million.

The allocation, which is contained in the 2006/2007 Estimates of Expenditure, forms part of efforts by the government to fast track Jamaica's e-readiness.

Among other things, the project seeks to reduce transaction costs and increase the use of information and communication technology in private entities and in the public sector.

During this fiscal year, it is anticipated that there will be ICT training for staff at the Commerce Science and Technology Ministry and related agencies.

Efforts will also be made to strengthen the Central Information Technology Office.

The initiation of phase two of the online tax collection drive is also expected to take place. Other targets include the delivery of online help facilities to support e-government online services.
