Some 2.5 to three million e-prescriptions have been issued since they replaced paper ones two weeks ago and the system is functioning smoothly, the Ministry of Health has announced.

E-referrals will be introduced starting February 14, the daily Vjesnik writes.

According to the Ministry, the project will reduce unnecessary administration and ensure that doctors have more time for their patients. The new system is expected to cut down pharmacists' administrative work by 80-90 per cent.

The Minister of Health Darko Milinovic added that patients will no longer need to pick up their lab results in person. These will be sent directly to primary care physicians.

According to the Ministry, the only other European countries to implement e-prescriptions are Denmark and Spain, where only the province of Catalonia is participating.

The Ministry of Health adds that e-health contributes to system-wide savings that will benefit both citizens and doctors.
