Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse initiated another key milestone in the e-Sri Lanka roadmap on Thursday by inaugurating the e-Government Centre of Excellence for Sri Lanka, the first of its kind in the country.

The Centre located at the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA) showcases the true spirit of public private partnerships collating the synergies of the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), SLIDA, Oracle Corporation Singapore, PC House and Millennium Information Technologies on behalf of SUN Microsystems and Cisco. The Centre will have a dedicated manager and team, with demonstration and development of e-governance solutions and proof-of-concepts carried out by technical experts of the partners. The Prime Minister witnessed a demonstration of successful e-government applications from around the world and software and hardware technology provided by the different partners at no cost to the Government. At a Media Conference that followed later in the day, Manju Haththotuwa, MD/CEO of ICTA said the establishment of the e-Government Centre of Excellence is yet another step that Sri Lanka takes on its journey towards enabling efficient, effective and transparent governance.

"The Centre will showcase best practices in e-governance, successful strategies and solutions from around the world, develop pilot applications and build capacity of public sector to make e-government a reality.

Perhaps most importantly, it will demonstrate the enormous potential of public private partnerships in the area of e-Government," he said.

Lalith Weeratunge, Secretary to the Prime Minister, who drives the e-Sri Lanka initiative through the Prime Minister's Office, said that the Centre will play a pivotal role in realising an e-Government, creating e-Government managers out of the 640 CIOs or Chief Innovation Officers appointed to every Ministry, provincial council, government department and agency across the country.

ICTA, under the leadership of the Prime Minister's Office, will take the running of the Centre under its wing and synchronise the Centre's activities, including skills development, with its e-Sri Lanka' programs for Re-engineering Government and ICT Human Resource Capacity Building.
