The Nigeria Data Protection Commission ( NDPC) on Tuesday said it was on guard to ensure that individuals and organizations who want to deploy technology to drive a smart city project comply with data protection laws in the country.
This disclosure was made by the National Commissioner of NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji in Abuja at the Second Nigerian Data Expo and Conference (NDEC) organized by ioSafe Nigeria, and Havel Corporate Concept in collaboration with some Federal government Ministries Departments and Agencies.
Olatunji noted that since President Bola Tinubu signed into law, the Nigerian Data Protection Act 2023, the Commission has been empowered to enforce the laws and protect the data privacy of all citizens.
He noted that many major cities of the world were already driving their economies with technology, which smart cities are all about.
Olatunji, “ Data is everything. Without data you can’t plan Without data you cannot have equality. Without data, you can’t execute anything and that’s why it’s important for us to work together and that’s why we are here to work with the organizers of this conference.
“ In our case, we will look at personal data which is really important which is our digital identity, wherever we go, where we leave our footprints on a regular basis and the need for such information about ourselves to be adequately protected to be safeguarded and processed within the provision of the law which is the Nigerian Data Protection act 2023 signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the 12th of June this year”.
Also, a United States Data Specialist, Mr. Robb Moore said that Nigerians could succeed better with more attention being paid to smart city projects with the use of technology.
Earlier, Dr. Ahmed Badanga, the Chief Executive Officer of Havel Corporate Concept, one of the promoters of the Smart City Project, said the collaboration with government agencies was to integrate all critical factors that will make Abuja’s dream of Smart City come through.
