Prof. Oladapo Afolabi said the number of pensioners dropped from 97,000 to 60,000, meaning that there had been ghost pensioners and fraud.
He said that more than US$935 million was paid every month as pensions to retired federal civil servants.
"With the biometrics, we have a new register of 60,000 pensioners which replaced the old register with 97,000.
"About 37,000 fake pensioners have been removed from our pay roll, thereby identifying the genuine pensioners and paying them their entitlement,’’ he said.
Afolabi said the present leadership of the civil service had set a target of productivity, improved welfare, training and retraining for all categories of civil servants.
The federal service has a strength of 197,000, but that the number is coming down following the ongoing biometrics staff auditing being conducted to fish out ghost workers.
