The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, says the e-LGA is a move to empower the 774 local governments in Nigeria towards the realisation of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s Seven-point-agenda and Vision 20-20-20.

The SGF, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, political affairs office under the office of the SGF, Dr. A.K. Muhammed, said this in Abuja yesterday during the preview summit of the e-enable local government administration by the national e-government strategies in collaboration with his office at the Yar’Adua Centre.

He said "The elga preview summit signals the commencement of e-enabled local government administration at all the grassroots tiers throughout the federation.

Though the preview summit is for a select audience, it aims to provide advanced knowledge and insight into the e-enabled Local government administration project, simply called the e-LGA project.

It was designed to empower each local government council in Nigeria by injecting ICT information, communications technology tools in a structural manner to make them efficient and responsive to citizens’ needs to propel national productivity from the grassroots.

Yayale said the goal of the e-LGA project was to establish a central platform where the functions and activities of local governments could be harmonised and through which any L.G. council could interact with other councils and citizens as well as business at any time. This, he said, is irrespective of their locations.

"The platform ties together LG operations, such as data gathering, revenue generation, job creation along with routine administrative functions and collaboration.

It will also enable special activities such as education and health management to serve as an electronic gateway to investors, tourists and the rest of the world."

The occasion was chaired by the minister of interior, General Godwin Abbe, represented by Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu.

Aliyu said the e-LGA project demonstrate government readiness to reposition the grassroots leadership to respond to challenges of governance.
