In realisation of the importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the need to increase access to medical records by medical personnel in Lagos State, the government has embarked on e-health project.

Governor Babatunde Fashola stated this on Wednesday at this year’s Public Health Lecture entitled: “Peculiar Disease and Health Related Conditions in Nigeria: We Shall Overcome and We Must Overcome Them.”

According to him, the project would also ensure that patients’ medical history could be easily accessed as well as assist in better case management.

The governor, represented by his Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said three health facilities—Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja; General Hospital, Lagos and General Hospital, Isolo—would serve as the pilot hospital in the first phase of the programme before extending the project to additional 10 designated hospitals in the second phase.

“The e-health project is a project that is dear to our heart and we are committed to its implementation. “Already, the installation of hardware systems, including servers with appropriate software, computers, scanners, radio etc is in various stages of completion and this would ensure that all points that have the system can access the software. The training and retraining of personnel would thereafter follow,” he said.

Also, the state government is planning to expand the capacity of health workers in the state to handle various forms of medical emergencies associated with a densely populated cities like Lagos.

The chairman of Lagos State Mobile Field Hospital Management Committee, Dr. Sikuade Jagun, said this on Thursday during a media tour of the emergency medicare facilities being put in place by the present administration at LASUTH.

Jagun called for a partnership between the media and the Fashola administration in the handling of emergencies, not only in the area of public enlightenment, but also by the media professionals offering themselves to be trained in basics of what to do at the scene of a disaster.
