Junior Minister Mary Hanafin today launched the Local Government Computer Services Board's 'Mobhaile' Initiative, at the ICT expo at the RDS.

A single source for local authority services such as planning applications, travel reports and development plans, Mobhaile will act as a 24-hour guide to local services which citizens businesses and local organisations can readily access. "This is ultimately what eGovernment flourishing at grass roots level is all about," Minister Hanafin, Minister with responsibility for the Information Society, said.

The Minister encouraged other government departments and agencies to come on board.

Citing the project as "an innovative approach to eGovernment which is targeting community groups", Minister Hanafin said she was "looking forward to seeing Mobhaile being used in every local authority by next year".

"This will allow for improved citizen service and will reinforce that eGovernment is really all about - commitment to the eCitizen," she added.

The Local Government Computer Services Board (LGCSB) has been working with seven local authorities on the pilot phase of the project.

According to Tom Dowling (Meath County Manager and Chairperson of the LGCSB), "within six months we should have a great diversity of community sites live and that is just the beginning. We are excited that this project will be of interest to so many and look forward to making a difference at local level".

Mobhaile is initially being rolled out in Tipperary North, Tipperary South, Offaly, South Dublin County Council, Mayo, Meath and Westmeath.
