The savings have resulted from a reformed agenda, an extensive programme of shared services, according to a recent County and City Manager’s Association report. Staffing numbers at Laois Co Council have also been reduced by 20% over the last four years.
Mr Carey confirmed that Laois Co Council would continue to work with local authorities in regards to shared services.
In total, between 2008 and 2012, Ireland’s local authorities collectively have achieved €830.3 million in savings, exceeding the target of €511 million set by the Local Government Efficiency Review in 2010.
Laois Co Council has achieved savings locally of €4.8 million in the two-year period April 2010 to March 2012.
Mr Carey said: “These savings were mainly achieved through significant efficiency gains, with payroll costs similarly substantially reduced. Laois Co Council has already reduced its staffing numbers by 118 between 2008 and 2012. This represents a decrease of 20%. The focus of all local government reforms is to maximise efficiencies while minimising impacts on frontline services and supporting local enterprise. Our focus in Laois Co Council is no different. Commercial rates have not been increased for a number of years and efficiencies through changed worked practices, additional shared services and depot rationalisation have delivered much need savings”.
In a press release attached to the statement, it states the success to date has been achieved by the staff of Laois Co Council, through both unions, management and elected members working together to create greater efficiencies and the process is ongoing.
