Taiwan and the United Kingdom tied for 10th place in the 2016 Waseda University International e-Government Rankings, up seven places from last year, according to a statement issued Monday by the National Development Council (NDC).

The survey results, released Aug. 3, show that the government's continuing efforts to upgrade e-services has won recognition from the world, the NDC said.

The survey of 65 countries and regions rates governments on network preparedness, online services and applications, management optimization, national portals and homepages, government chief information officers, e-government promotion, e-participation and digital inclusion, open government data, and cyber security.

Taiwan ranked eighth in both the open government data and e-government promotion categories, and 10th in the category of online services and applications, according to the NDC.

The NDC attributed the jump in Taiwan's ranking mainly to its performance in promoting the opening of government data. With the government's ambitious push of e-participation by making use of digital technology, Taiwan could score high in the e-participation and digital inclusion category in the future.

Waseda University in Tokyo has since 2005 cooperated with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum to conduct the annual international e-government rankings survey, according to the NDC.

The survey was published in English, which will help other countries to learn about the latest developments in Taiwan's information and communications industry, and lift the country's visibility, it said.

In keeping with the global trend, the government has worked out the fifth phase of its E-Government Project -- Digital Government for 2017-2020, with the focus on the development of new technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence.

The 2016 ranking survey has Singapore in first place for the second year in a row, followed by the United States, Denmark, Korea, and Japan in that order. Estonia, Canada, Australia and New Zealand follow in places 6-9.
