A total of 1.58 million people had applied for access to the free Wi-Fi service, called Taipei Free, as of the end of November 2012, up from about 900,000 subscribers at the beginning of the year.
Use of the service, launched in July 2011 to provide public wireless services in government buildings, commercial centers and on buses, was also on the rise throughout 2012, the statement said.
Subscribers used Taipei Free an average 1.67 million times per month to access the Internet in the first 11 months of 2012, and over 2.2 million times per month between July and November, signaling an upward trend.
Meanwhile, the city's government's own Chinese and English websites drew a total of 1.59 million visits per month over the same period, an increase of 2.84 percent from the previous year.
Interest in another of the city's online services -- Taipei e-services online -- also picked up during the first 11 months of 2012.
The service, a platform organized by the city government for residents to process applications for administrative services online, drew 155,000 visits per month from January to November, up 2.86 percent from 2011, the department said.
In addition, 420,000 people had registered cyber citizen accounts through the e-services website as of the end of November, about 20 percent more than were registered at the same time in 2011, according to the department.
