Taiwan and ally Saint Lucia opened a two-day conference on information and communication technology (ICT) in the Caribbean country Monday, drawing the participation of officials from 10 Caribbean countries and territories.

Tao Wen-lung, secretary-general of Taiwan's International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF), told participants that the event was organized to promote ICT development in the Caribbean and narrow the digital gap between developing countries in the region and developed nations, according to a statement by Taiwan's Embassy to Saint Lucia.

The ICDF has already helped some of Taiwan's allies in the region, including Belize, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Lucia, develop e-government and establish national ICT centers to improve administrative efficiency, Tao said.

In his address on the opening day of the seminar, Taiwan's ambassador to Saint Lucia Tom Chou noted that Taiwan wants to share its successful experience in developing ICT with its allies and help Caribbean countries improve their people's welfare.

Lenard Montoute, Saint Lucia's social transformation minister, said that with Taiwan's assistance, his country opened the ICT center last year and also established an information technology office to promote IT education and training.

The new facilities have helped boost employment in his country, Montoute said.

The conference was attended by officials from Taiwan as well as allies Belize, Dominican Republic, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia.

Other countries and territories represented were Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.
