Following a government drive to establish a sophisticated e-government network, the Ministry of National Defense has developed a new multi-function Web site that offers enhanced administrative efficiency, a military official said yesterday.

Cheng Jheng-chi, a commissioner from the archives department of the MND, said the MND had, under advice from the Executive Yuan, employed non-government organizations to improve its Web site content. The MND has provided relevant files and documents, and the Taiwan News and Interweb Technology Corporation have taken part in the project, dealing with the online resources.

In order to increase administrative efficiency, the MND promoted a "single service window," integrating different people's needs through users' identities and scope of business, he said.

A firewall would block junk mail and hackers, Cheng noted.

The site will feature news releases, official reports, statutes relating to the military, and briefings by the MND and the minister.

A number of historical military documents have also been scanned and will be posted on the Web site for public viewing, Cheng added.

With the aim of providing a service for foreigners as well, the Web site will feature a Chinese and English version.

The site is located at: www.mnd.gov.tw.

The R.O.C. is taking advantage of the Internet and other information and communications technologies by further integrating systems and deploying online digital applications to advance towards electronic government (e-government).

By the end of 2002, 4,863 government agencies had established Web sites, according to Taiwan Yearbook 2004.
