Hundreds of government officials from 37 countries are to participate in next month’s Smart City Summit and Expo to exchange views on topics such as sustainable development and net zero emissions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.
The events, focusing on the themes digital and green transformation, are to take place from March 19 to 21 at the Nangang Exhibition Center in Taipei and from March 21 to March 23 at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center.

Iveda is working with the government to design and install a video command, communication, and control system, anticipated to be completed by year end 2023.
Smart infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI) specialist Iveda has signed a $1.7m contract with a Taiwanese government agency for networking equipment and interprocess communication computers to 45 new locations.
Charles Lin, Deputy Mayor of Kaohsiung has been actively involved in promoting the development of smart cities in Taiwan and has been recognized for his contributions to this field.
One of the questions asked to Mr. Lin was which countries, aside from Taiwan, have made significant progress towards establishing smart cities. In response, Mr. Lin noted that many cities around the world are claiming to be working towards becoming smart cities. However, he emphasized that there are several components that need to be set up for a city to truly be considered smart.

Resilient smart cities are cities that have the ability to absorb, recover, and prepare for future economic, environmental, social, and institutional shocks.
One of the goals of Taiwan's 2050 net-zero emissions pathway is to promote resilient, smart cities through research and development in key areas such as urban development and regeneration. Taiwan’s goals are directly tied to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Importantly, one of the 17 SDGs is “Sustainable Cities and Communities”.
In this post, we will share some insights from an interview with Charles Lin, the Deputy Mayor of Kaohsiung City Government, who shared his vision and strategy of making Kaohsiung a smart city. Charles Lin was the Deputy Mayor of Taipei City as well, known for his vision with smart cities and is also the person who makes Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE) possible.
Kaohsiung is the second-largest city in Taiwan and a major hub for heavy industry and now is also a city that is embracing the smart city concept and transforming itself into a more livable, sustainable and innovative place.
