"The e-Health Project is one of the priority development programmes and among the largest national IT projects. Partly co-financed by the European Social Fund, substantial funds have been earmarked for its implementation." The Minister of Public Administration, Irma Pavlinič-Krebs, addressed these words to participants in her opening remarks to the introductory part of the international e-Health seminar held at Center Evropa in Ljubljana.

The international e-health seminar entitled "SEeHealth: The Roadmap from Concept to Practice" and organised, together with its partners and stakeholders, by the regional Centre for e-Governance Development (Ce GD) was opened by the Minister of Public Administration, Irma Pavlinič Krebs, who addressed the participants. In her address, she first emphasised that the use of information and communication technologies in public administration services could significantly contribute to the provision of efficient and high-quality services at a lower cost to both citizens and companies.

"Slovenia is aware that if e-government is meant to make the business activities of citizens and companies easier and provide economy in terms of time and money, the focus should surely be on efficient services with high added value". Minister Pavlinič Krebs went on to say that we will therefore develop those e-services that are of key importance to citizens and companies and can significantly contribute to the modern operation of public administration as a service for all stakeholders, consequently also reducing the costs for the administration itself and the users of its services. The international seminar to be concluded tomorrow is intended to discuss current problems related to the implementation of the e-Health project in EU Member States and the countries of South-eastern Europe. In the words of the Slovenian Minister of Health, the e-Health project provides answers to contemporary health challenges. "The principle goal of this project is to establish a modern IT environment, facilitating safe electronic commerce and effective control of a vast number of health and health-related data." According to Ms Pavlinič Krebs, the results of the e-Health Project and the introduction of new technologies and solutions will bring about better adaptation of health treatment to individual patients, faster and more effective diagnosis, and a higher level of treatment and safety of patients. "The e-Health Project should also contribute to rationalization of the use of means and to a more effective health system. It will also enable service providers and administrators to exchange knowledge, good practices and relevant information much more easily, while citizens will have the possibility of obtaining appropriate information and using the required services by the fastest and safest way – via the internet and a secure national health information network."

In the introductory part of the seminar, the participants were also addressed by the CeGD Director, Blaž Golob, and the General Manager of Microsoft Slovenija, Matej Potokar. Moreover, the seminar will feature some prominent lecturers, including the Deputy Head of the European Commission's ICT for Health unit, Ilias Iakovidis, the EC representative, Catalina Dima, and the information commissioner of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar. The seminar will also be attended by the chief consultant for e-health at the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic, who will outline his country's e-health programme, the representative of Danish regions describing the Danish e-health portal and representatives from South-eastern Europe, who will outline individual examples of successful solutions in their countries. Representatives from the private sector attending the seminar will introduce participants to the most advanced ICT solutions in the area of e-health.
