The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and Sasktel have made a deal with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, as well as Health Canada, to bring broadband wiring to schools and health care facilities on 83 Saskatchewan First Nation communities.
“This investment will provide a sound infrastructure for community and public health and support the goals of Saskatchewan’s Health and Wellness Plan,” Gary Holub, Media Relations Officer for the Government of Canada said in a Press release.
The Federal government is expected to invest $5.8 million over five years to create the infrastructure to bring broadband, and E-health services to First Nations communities.
E-health is a Saskatchewan initiative to build an electronic health record system and operate and maintain technical elements in healthcare delivery organization in Saskatchewan.
Sasktel is expected to start installing broadband fibres in First Nations Communities this year and expects installation to be complete by 2014.
Birch Narrows Dene Nation, Clearwater River Dene Nation, Island Lake First Nation, Buffalo River Dene Nation, English River First Nation, Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, Canoe Lake Cree Nation, Flying Dust First Nation and Waterhen Lake First Nation are all expected to receive broadband connectivity.
Meadow Lake Tribal Council was unable to comment at press time.
