Ontario will launch two paperless-prescription pilot projects at an estimated cost of $680,000.

The “ePrescribing” initiative will involve two family physician practices and pharmacies in Sault Ste. Marie and the Collingwood area.

The physicians will send prescriptions electronically to the pharmacy of the patient’s choice.

Experts say the advantage is legible prescriptions and checks for allergies and drug-to-drug reactions, lowering the possibility of bad drug reactions for patients.

Health Minister David Caplan said this program is a first for Ontario and Canada.

“ePrescibing has long been recognized as a key component of any effective e-health strategy,” he said. “And when fully implemented, it will eliminate all handwritten paper transactions with respect to prescribing and dispensing of medications.”

Close to 400,000 Ontarians suffer a preventable adverse drug reaction each year, Caplan said.

The estimated cost of rolling out the program across Ontario is $75-$100 million.
