Stakeholders in Nelson Mandela Bay have committed to building a climate-smart city. The pledge outlines the development of a Climate Resilient Development Strategy and aims to reinvent the local economy, with an emphasis on inclusive growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation.

In a bold move towards building a climate-smart city, various stakeholders including business, civil society, youth, education sectors, the municipal government, and the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) have signed a pledge in Nelson Mandela Bay. The objective of this commitment is to develop a Climate Resilient Development Strategy (CRDS), a robust blueprint aimed at fortifying the metro's defense against the impacts of climate change and fostering new green economic pathways.

A Collaborative Initiative

This initiative is deeply rooted in multi-stakeholder collaboration, with an emphasis on inclusive growth, job creation, poverty alleviation, and an economically just transition. At its core, the initiative recognizes the urgency of climate change and the need for immediate, collective action to mitigate its effects. The collaboration also underlines the importance of unity in facing the challenges posed by a rapidly changing climate.

From Discussions to Action

The process, which took off with the PCC's engagement 18 months prior, has transitioned swiftly from discussions to action. A comprehensive strategy framework is expected to be completed by early 2025. This quick turn-around is indicative of the urgency with which the stakeholders perceive the threat of climate change.

Reinventing the Local Economy

Accompanying this local-led approach is the establishment of a local economy reinvention think tank in 2023. This think tank aims to position the Bay as a role model for climate change response and reinvent the economy, particularly the manufacturing sector, to adapt to the rapidly evolving global economic and environmental landscape. By doing so, Nelson Mandela Bay takes a significant step not only towards climate resilience but also towards a sustainable, thriving economy.
