The City of Tshwane has approved a “groundbreaking” broadband project aimed at promoting an e-government, despite objections from the Gauteng and national treasuries.
According to a report by Moneyweb, the 18-year build, operate, and transfer contract was awarded to a newly-formed company.
The report stated that the project’s approval comes after Altech Alcom Matomo was appointed in June 2015, following the two treasuries calling the tender process flawed.
The project will be designed and built through a special purpose vehicle named Newshelf 1327.
Project was on hold
The project was previously put on hold after it was withdrawn from a city council agenda in February.
“Due to delayed and ongoing engagements with stakeholders, such as National Treasury, the item will have to be withdrawn from the Council agenda… on request of the ICT Department of the City of Tshwane,” said the City at the time.
The DA’s Motheo Mtimkulu said the withdrawal of the report happened shortly after he informed the media that Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa was trying to force through the “dodgy broadband deal”.
