Wordpress dominates the CMS scene globally, but government websites are a different story

WordPress is the most popular content management system (CMS) in the world, but Joomla dominates when looking at South African government websites.

Recent research by BuiltWith shows that 63% of the world’s top million websites are powered by WordPress.

Joomla is second with 11% and Drupal third with 9%.

The situation changes when it comes to government websites. According to Benjamin Balter, who is part of the US E-Government and Federal IT Team in the Executive Office of the President, Drupal dominates the US government website space.

“Drupal powers twice as many federal government websites as every other CMS combined. That’s more than six Drupal sites for every one WordPress,” said Balter.

In South Africa the favourite for government websites is not Drupal. A quick survey showed that Joomla is the favourite CMS among SA government department websites, with DotNetNuke a distant second.

The following table gives an overview of the CMS choice of South African government departments. For departments not listed there was no easy way to establish which CMS was used.
