Transforming Government since 2001
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on President Thabo Mbeki to take the lead in ensuring that the government improves on-line access to its services.

The party has released a discussion document on ways of rolling out e-government. It says the current Batho Pele electronic gateway to government services has not kept pace with socio-economic changes in the country.

Karel Minnie, the DA's spokesperson on the public service, says South Africa's hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup will dramatically increase interest in the country as a tourist and investment destination.

Minnie says making it possible for people to apply online for travel documents, obtain business licences, residence permits and the likes will assist the country tremendously in extracting the maximum benefit from all the associated opportunities.
