Gemalto, a world leader in digital security, has opened a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence for the ROP. The company has for the last decade worked on national eIDs and more recently, on ePassports.

Dedicated to knowledge transfer and sharing of best practices, the centre is designed to train ROP staff on technologies and processes associated to eIDs and ePassports for sultanate's citizens. It is equipped with the latest Gemalto technology and back-end systems needed to issue both types of documents.

Gemalto will train ROP trainers who will then pass on their knowledge to front-desk staff. “Being a pioneer in our region, Gemalto has consistently supported us when it comes to government programmes,” said Maj Gen Sulaiman al Harthy, assistant inspector general, ROP.

“Gemalto's ability to offer pooling documents infrastructure puts us in a unique position to deliver the best to our citizens.”

Hisham Surakhi, senior vice-president for government programmes in the Middle East Gemalto, said, “Oman has been a leader in implementing advanced eGovernment solutions, being the first country in the GCC to issue its citizens with electronic ID cards in 2002 in cooperation with Gemalto.”

He added, “The newly built Centre of Excellence, coupled with its state-of-the-art technology will further help Oman achieve its digital vision.”

Gemalto's unique technology portfolio - from advanced cryptographic software embedded in a variety of familiar objects, to highly robust and scalable back-office platforms for authentication, encryption and digital credential management - is delivered by its world-class service teams.

It has 14,000 employees operating from 99 offices; 34 personalisation and data centres, and 24 research and software development centres located in 46 countries.
