Technology savvy people are eagerly looking forward to the Sultanate’s first-ever Mobile Apps Centre, which is expected to be up and running this year. The Information Technology Authority (ITA) is in the process of launching a tender for establishing a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for ‘Mobile Applications Development’ in the Sultanate. Speaking to the Observer, Dr Salim bin Sultan al Ruzaiqi, CEO, ITA, said the Information Technology Authority is seeking to contract a reputable contractor to build a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence (CoE) for ‘Mobile Applications Development’. The Mobile Applications Centre is being developed to offer a number of services to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), job-seekers, freelancers, and firms in various business incubators. It will also to act as an IT-enabled platform for researchers and government agencies.

“When I first came to know about this project I was excited right away and I’ve been looking forward to this for quite awhile,” said a student of Middle East College. The Mobile Applications Centre, part of the various e-initiatives aimed at developing a knowledge society in Oman, is expected to a go a long way in promoting information and communication technology (ICT) industry, the SME sector and it will be a platform to train budding talent in the ICT industry. Experts say mobile applications used as per best practices can be a great enabler and a boon for the SME owners in pursuing their business growth. With the fast pace development of mobile applications, business owners can now use innovative mobile app development to develop their brand awareness among large numbers of existing and prospective clients in minimum time with much less effort and in a cost effective way.

As for the SMEs, a mobile application is ideal to keep their clients and others informed about promotions, upcoming events, and new developments. This in turn helps retain and expand customer base. Business owners, it is revealed in recent studies, find mobile apps a far better alternative than sending messages through e-mails, which requires much more effort and time without knowing whether the intended person has read it or not and involves less interaction by the recipient. Through mobile app development, one can get instant acknowledgment from one’s customer who will appreciate having received such personalised messages and deals.

The ITA has also launched a tender for the upgrade of the National Data Centre (NDC). The ITA already boasts a number of important e-projects such as the national e-payment gateway, the official e-government services portal (www.oman.om), National Centre of Information Security (CIS), Regional Cyber Security Centre, Centre of Excellence for e-Content and Applications Development, the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and the SAS programme.
