In the first stage of this initiative, which is expected to be implemented in two months, ROP will generate a civil ID number at the airport immigration and send it along with all other details of the expatriate to the ministry online.
This would mean that an employer would no longer have to visit the ministry during the process of registering an expatriate employee for the first time. The process will now be reduced to just the medical test and a visit to the office of the Directorate General of Civil Status for the residence card to be issued.
“This will eliminate one step in the process of registering an expatriate worker,” said Eng Mubarak Salim al Suti, assistant director general for information technology, Directorate General of Planning and Development, Ministry of Manpower.
In the second stage of this initiative, ROP will engage once again with the ministry online when the expatriate's residence card is printed. “Details such as the dates of issue and expiry will be made available to us for future use,” Eng Suti said.
Another feature of this move, he said, is that the civil ID number of the expatriate generated at the airport immigration will be retained as his/her residence card number to ensure a seamless transition. “Our aim is to make the whole process paperless.”
